According to ProPublica, large pharma companies have been paying large fines due to finding unique and extraordinary ways to influence doctors into recommending their drugs and medicines. Knowing they can not pay them directly, many hire these doctors to speak at gatherings, paying them excessive fees in order to compesate them in a covert manner. Internal employees have helped assemble the necessary evidence to bring these companies to justice for manipulating the sytem and illegally influencing the relationship between the doctor and the patient. According to the report over two million doctors have been involved in this exchange.
In many circumstances, the medical professions were told they should advoacate "off-label" uses for drugs in circulation, a behavior which is not only risky but illegal until these they ahve been approved by the Federal Drug Adminstration. The article attached points to similar crimes from such companies as Allergan, Ortho-McNeil, Forest Laboratories and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals who have paid extremely fines while misbehaving, allowing citizens who report these crimes to be incredibly rewarded for their service in bringing these crimes to light.
